The Macallan Gate is the perfect example of this – a bespoke wrought iron driveway gate commissioned by Burgess Studio Ltd, it epitomises our expertise in creating driveway gates that effortlessly blend advanced technology with elegant, traditional craftsmanship.

Project Overview

The Macallan gate is a true statement piece, which our team has specifically designed to complement its scenic hilly surroundings. Spanning 8 metres in length, the Macallan gate’s imposing size is complemented by a highly distinctive style, merging timeless design with modern functionality – giving the gate the perfect mix of security and aesthetic appeal.

Design and Fabrication

Our client wanted a wrought iron gate design that mirrored the natural curves of the surrounding landscape, creating harmony between the gate and its scenery, so our in-house team came up with a unique wave-like design that mirrors the undulating hills of the local area.

To achieve this, our blacksmith used printed templates of the wave patterns. Each bar was then bent and shaped by hand, creating a dynamic flowing pattern, and ensuring that every curve perfectly matched the intended design. On the bottom half of the gate, simple flat bars are used to create the impression of a sleek, minimalist base.

One of the most distinctive features of the Macallan Gate is its recessed lettering. The gate prominently displays 30mm thick letters, all hand drawn and then fabricated to sit flush within the gate’s frame. Each letter was embellished with gold leaf by an external specialist, adding a touch of luxury. The lettering and smaller details of the gate were meticulously gold leafed by our team, creating a beautiful contrast against the black powder-coated finish of the gate’s ironwork.

Beyond the aesthetic elements, the Macallan Gate required specialised hinges due to its sheer size and weight. Standard hinges would not suffice for an automatic driveway gate of this scale, so the custom hinges were necessary to ensure that the gate could swing effortlessly, while still maintaining its structural integrity over time.

Installation and Automation

The Macallan gate is more than just an electric driveway gate – it’s a work of art. Our team designed, manufactured and installed the gate as a complete solution, from concept to completion.

From the outset we knew that each leaf would be five metres wide, so our team sourced the hardware to match. We used six M30 super hinges to support the gate’s size and weight, and added 10mm steel plates for extra durability, blending them seamlessly into the gate’s design and tube sections to reinforce the hinge threads.

For the automation, the Macallan required an underground system, which needed to be particularly powerful to accommodate the weight of the gate. We ultimately used the Came Frog Plus P7, a powerhouse automation kit that was installed by Justin, one of our technicians. We knew it would be perfect for the job, offering reliable, remote-controlled access without any fuss.
