With the start of a new year, it’s natural to think about fresh beginnings and ways to enhance your home or business. If you want to transform your property, a thoughtfully designed gate could be just the thing to upgrade security, improve long-term value and make your premises look more welcoming, impressive, and distinctly yours.
At North Valley Forge, we’ve spent over 30 years helping homeowners and businesses upgrade their properties, designing and installing premium electric gates that combine craftsmanship, durability and striking aesthetics every time. Here’s what you need to know about the process, with some tips for getting the gate you’ve always dreamed of in 2026.
Set your priorities and design goals
The first step in planning a bespoke gate project is deciding what you want your gate to achieve. Maybe your focus is on adding seclusion and peace of mind with a closed-board electric privacy gate; perhaps you’re interested in creating a sense of timeless elegance with an electric wrought iron gate. Next, and possibly most crucially, is the look of the gate. This is where we really shine. At North Valley Forge, all of our gates are made to order and can be fully personalised to your exact preferences. From custom scrollwork to bespoke monograms, there’s nothing we can’t make, creating a final product that effortlessly balances aesthetics and practicality.
With so much creative freedom on offer, it’s natural for clients to be a little daunted at this stage. If you get stuck on what style to commit to, it can be helpful to draw inspiration from your property and choose a design that will complement and enhance its appearance. For traditional homes, features like ornate scrollwork, finials and classic detailing in darker finishes tend to sit beautifully alongside period architecture. In comparison, cottage-style homes often suit softer designs, with gentle curves or subtle latticework that create a warm and welcoming entrance. If your property has a more modern feel, then choosing clean lines, geometric patterns, and understated detailing in darker or metallic finishes can create a bold but refined look. These are just some suggestions – because our gates are fully bespoke, you can easily create a design that’s uniquely yours, transforming your property’s entrance and delivering a seamless combination of beauty, security and functionality.
Consider your property and access needs
Whenever we work with a client, we always recommend that they take the time to think about how they’ll use their gate on a daily basis. At North Valley Forge, our skilled craftspeople can build both manual and electric driveway gates to your exact specifications, giving you a choice between traditional charm and modern convenience. Manual gates bring a hands‑on feel and straightforward operation, which some homeowners love, while automated gates make everyday use easier, particularly in bad weather or for busy households where frequent access is expected. Automated systems also offer extras like electric locking or remote control, so you can open and close your entrance without leaving your car.
At this stage, it’s also worth considering how you want your gate to open, and what option will work best for your specific property. For larger driveways, electric swing gates are always a popular option, smoothly gliding inwards to add a sense of timeless grandeur. If space is more limited, sliding gates are often a better solution. They move smoothly along the boundary rather than swinging open, making them ideal for narrower driveways. Cantilevered gates are another great option, featuring a suspended design with no need for a ground track. This option is often chosen for its sleek, clean effect and is perfect for sloped ground.
Understanding these differences ensures that your gate is both beautiful and fully practical. It’s also important to consider factors like access points, power supply for automation, and any landscaping or groundwork that may be required during installation.
Understand the process from concept to completion
Creating a bespoke gate involves several stages, and knowing what to expect helps to keep the journey smooth and stress-free. Typically, we begin with the design process, working with you to understand the exact look and effect you’re going for and fine tuning the details. Next, our experts will typically visit your property to take precise measurements and assess the site – in some cases, we can also work around this with the help of client dimensions and imagery. Using this information, one of our CAD engineers will create Design Drawings with scaled dimensions, so you can really start to see what your gate will look like when it’s been built.
If you’re happy with these drawings, our fabrication department will then get started building your bespoke gate, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to produce outstanding strength and durability. For added protection, we’ll use hot dip galvanisation and powder coating, adding your chosen RAL shade and finish for the ultimate bespoke touch. Finally, we’ll install your gate, and it’ll be ready to enjoy for decades to come.
