How can rust affect your wrought iron gates?

Rust is one issue you shouldn’t underestimate. On an aesthetic level, it can spoil the appearance of your gate, creating unsightly patches of flaky discolouration – but it doesn’t stop there. If left unchecked, it can also weaken the gate and threaten its structural integrity, leading to costly repairs and even replacement. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent rust from taking hold.
How can you protect your gates from rust?
Depending on what kind of gates you choose, regular maintenance will be necessary to keep them strong all year round. This is especially important in wet seasons like autumn and winter, when significant rainfall and damp dirt and leaves can trap moisture and corrode the surface. You can also use solutions like primers, paints, waxes and sealants to protect your wrought iron gates from harsh weather. You’ll likely need to repaint your gates every few years and reapply waxes every one or two years. This is also a good time to examine your gates for any scratches or chips. Though these minor blemishes may not detract from the overall appeal of your gates, they can leave the metal exposed and vulnerable to rust.
