Now, while metalwork itself is built to withstand all weather conditions, the seasons themselves can all affect the installation process, at least to a certain extent. Ground conditions, temperature, and seasonal demand all play a role in the installation process.
Now, every season brings its own advantages and challenges when it comes to fitting gates and railings. As you can imagine, some are slightly more favourable than others – but when it comes right down to it, there’s no time of year at which you can’t buy and install wrought iron gates. So, here’s what’s worth considering!
Winter – a cool time to install wrought iron gates
Winter is often overlooked for installations due to the potential for frost, heavy rain, or even snow. And yes, there are a couple of problems associated with these conditions – for example, they can make digging post holes more difficult, and slow down setting times for concrete. Shorter daylight hours can also limit working time.
However, winter does have its benefits. Many installation companies have more availability at this time of year, which means you may be able to enjoy more flexibility in choosing your installation date. By the same token, if any planning applications are required, these can sometimes be processed more quickly due to lower demand.
Another advantage is that outdoor spaces tend to be used less frequently in winter, minimising the potential for disruption to residents or staff. So, while the work can be a little faster in the warmer months, if you don’t mind allowing a little extra time for completion, winter can be a surprisingly practical option.
The milder conditions of Spring
As you can imagine, Spring is a popular time for installing metal gates and railings, largely because it provides stable and moderate weather conditions. The temperatures are comfortable for staff, and the ground is generally softer than in winter, making it easier to dig and secure posts.
This season also means that you’ll be able to have your gates and railings in place before summer, when gardens and driveways are used more frequently. With fewer weather-related delays compared to winter, installations can often be completed to tighter schedules.
Another advantage of spring is that demand for installers starts to increase but hasn’t yet reached its peak. This means availability is still relatively good, making it easier to secure a convenient installation date before the busier summer period.
Summer – act quick to get your spot in the sun
Summer provides warm, dry conditions that help speed up the setting of concrete and the curing of protective coatings. Longer daylight hours also mean installers can work for extended periods, making it possible to complete projects more efficiently than in the depths of winter.
That’s not to say summer is free from challenges – metal surfaces may become hot to the touch, and the application of paints or finishes may need particular attention to ensure that they all dry evenly. In some cases, installers may need to work in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak heat of the day. (To be honest though, those days will be relatively few and far between.)
The biggest challenge with summer is that since it’s a peak time for outdoor home improvement projects, installers are often at their busiest. This means it’s a good idea to book in advance is essential to secure your chosen slot. Ultimately though, if you want their gates and railings installed before autumn, summer remains a solid choice.
Autumn – a beautifully balanced time to get your project sorted
Autumn is an excellent time for installation, offering a balance between warm summer conditions and the colder, wetter months ahead. The weather is generally still mild, and the demand for installers often begins to drop, so it can be easier to book a convenient installation date.
Another advantage of autumn installation is that it prepares the property for winter. With gates and railings securely in place, you can enjoy improved security and peace of mind before harsher weather sets in.
Plus, while autumn temperatures can tend towards the chilly side, they tend not too extreme, which means that paint and protective coatings can be applied with minimal risk of uneven drying. Ground conditions are also still favourable, making it a practical and efficient time for installation.
